Parenting Your Adult Children
Jane Ajaya, MSEd, LCSW

Many books have been written to guide parents through all the stages of childhood.  We’re warned about the “terrible two’s,” informed about positive reinforcement, and reminded of the importance of self-esteem and confidence in our elementary schoolers and teenagers.  However, there are few books to teach parents how to interact with our adult children, age 20-50. Parenting doesn’t stop once our kids reach 18!

For example, how do we know when supporting becomes enabling?  How do we help our adult kids without making them feel criticized or dependent?  When is it best to “show but not tell” so our children become their own confident authorities on life?  What are appropriate boundaries?  How do we assert our own feelings without creating hurt or conflict?  After our children marry and have children of their own, how do we help to create cohesion with in-laws and blended families?  When do we suggest solutions to problems and when do we mind our own business?

In addition, so much must change over time to sustain meaningful and loving relationships, as our kids and WE get older.  So let’s shed some light!  The growth of awareness, understanding, and group support can only benefit us all.

You’re invited to join in a small group discussion of our experiences as parents of grown-ups.  Please bring your knowledge, your questions and your sense of humor.

Bio

Jane Ajaya, MSEd, LCSW, has a BS in Education with a minor in Psychology, a Masters in Education and a Masters in Clinical Social Work.  She has worked as a psychotherapist for 30 years, and formerly was a teacher, guidance counselor and social worker. In her early years, Jane was awarded the John Forman Award for excellence in facilitating group dynamics, and has led therapeutic student groups, parenting groups, and sees clients individually.

Jane is experienced in training individuals, couples and groups in non-violent communications, conflict resolution, emotional regulation, and problem solving skills.  She has been a speaker for hospitals, universities, corporations, libraries and school districts.

She has practiced meditation, studied with spiritual teachers, and participated in Shamanic and Native American medicine ceremonies for many years.  In the past, Jane owned a New Age spiritual bookstore, which expanded her lifelong study of world religions and spiritual healing traditions.

Jane’s mission is to promote balance, harmony and fulfillment.  She provides counseling / coaching for individuals, couples and families seeking a better personal and interpersonal experience in life, and to those seeking freedom from the suffering of conditioned, outmoded patterns of behavior and thinking.

Jane brings practice wisdom, science, compassion, spirituality and humor to each session.  She draws from many schools of psychology. She has a strong grip on logic, evidence and research that is balanced by her spirituality, empathy and intuition.

Personally, Jane is a mother of a son and a daughter, and a grandmother to three children ages 1 to 15 years old. She is a gardener and poet, and prays for her clients every night.

Testimonials

“As a therapist looking for a therapist, I was picky.  When I found Jane, she wasn’t who I was looking for but… she turned out to be exactly who I needed.  Jane artfully supports me on my journey to self-awareness and self-compassion, while offering me the universal spiritual wisdom that I so crave.  I am continually grateful for her insights, compassion and ability to hold a safe space for me to resolve my issues.”

“Working with Jane for the past two years has been nothing less than a transformative and life-changing experience.  Having had many therapists over the years, my work with Jane has been deeper, more life enriching, and far more fruitful than my many years of therapy combined prior to working with Jane.  Compassionate, empathetic, wise, well-informed, and drawing from an array of skills, training, and philosophies in order to meet me right where I am as an individual, my experience of Jane has been simply amazing.  For friends of mine who have embarked on what can be an overwhelming and scary search for a good therapist, I have with confidence recommended Jane and will continue to do so.  Jane’s peaceful and serene presence has in itself served as a safe space to do healing inner work and experience calms in life’s storms.“  —  Brooke F.

“Jane is the best therapist I have ever been to! She has the ability to listen and take what is said in a way that there is deep discovery and REAL progress each and every session. She is empathetic, funny and just adorable! This awesome lady is always expanding her passion for the desire to help others with ongoing curious books and coursework. Her methods of getting to the bottom of it ultimately circle back to a deeper love of self and others, I have only felt lifted heart centered joy every time I walk away. With love and gratitude.” – Aura M.
